If you are new to the term “freelance writer”, let me explain to you what is a freelance first.
What is Freelance?
According to the Business Dictionary definition:
Freelance is define as:
Working on a contract basis for a variety of companies, as opposed to working as an employee for a single company.
Freelancers are often considered to be self-employed. They have the freedom to pick and choose their projects and companies they would like to be associated with.
Thus, what is a freelance writer?
Freelance writers are self-employed and are able to submit their work to many different places, without being tied to any one company in particular.
The beauty of being a freelance writer is that you do not just get paid to write but you can do this online from home or any location of your choice.
Yes! Make money from home. This is one of the legitimate ways to make money online.
Writers Are In demand
Freelance writing has a low barrier entry, it is suitable for students as side gigs or 9-to-5 workers to earn extra cash.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for writers and authors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2016 to 2026.
Freelance writers are paid either by per word, per hour or per project (flat-rate) basis.
Now Let’s Find Out:
How To Become A Freelance Writer Even You Have No Experience
1. Believe In Yourself
This may sound like it has nothing to do with becoming a freelance writer but in fact, it is the most important aspect of the journey in my opinion.
If you yourself cannot believe you can be a successful freelance writer, then who can?
Never doubt yourself what you can achieve when you set your mind to it.
Believe in your own abilities that you can and your prospective client will see it too.
Believe in yourself, and the rest will fall into place. Have faith in your own abilities, work hard, and there is nothing you cannot accomplish. ——- Brad Henry

2. Start Writing
As a beginner freelance writer, your most importing thing now is to start writing. You need to keep on writing and get your work out to the world.
The best place to do this is to start your own blog. Yes, a blog!

A blog is not just a great place to start but also a place to showcase your works and build your portfolio online.
Most important, write as much as possible when you can. Do not stop writing.
Start creating samples content that you want your potential client to see. Link your blog to your professional social media accounts, let more people see your works.
Hone your skill and keep learning and improving.
3. Find Your Niches
Select a few niche topics that you have the interest to write about or you already have knowledge in and be an expert in these niches.
For example, if you are an interior designer, you can write about interior design, home decor & furniture niche.
Having multiple niches will help you to find a job when one industry is not doing well.
4. Be Patient
Yes! You do need to be patient.
Understand that nothing happens overnight. Every baby step you made is a step closer to your goal.
With your big picture in mind (to be a successful freelance writer) break them down to small actionable tasks that you can do daily. Set small goals that you want to achieve monthly.
Many people start off as part-time basis and transit to full-time after they are able to make an income that they are comfortable with.
5. Practice And Level Up Your Skills
For a start writing skill is what you should be focusing on. The better the writer you are, the easier your path will be.
Build your experience by trying freelancing marketplace such as:
- Upwork freelance
- Freelancer
- Guru freelance
Do remember rejection is another normal thing every freelance writer will face. Do not take it to personally and start doubting yourself.
6. Set A Regular Working Schedule
I know you are excited about your new journey. I understand you want to achieve it fast.
But as a freelance writer, you do need to set a regular working schedule for yourself. If not, you will end up working day and night without having enough rest.
So, do take some break and spent time with your family. Remember they are the reason why you start writing in the first place.
7. Keep Track Of Your Income From The Very Beginning
Keeping track of your income from the very beginning even though you might not earn that much.
Track all your income and expenses from the start will not just help you to be more accountable to yourself, it will also help you during tax season.
All you need is just a simple spreadsheet to record all your expense, income, net profit/loss, etc.
As your income grows you will be grateful that you have started it since the beginning.
8. Invest In Finding A Mentor Or Coach
As I mentioned earlier, freelance writing has a low barrier entry. Thus, you do not need to have a formal degree to be a freelance writer.
But if you are starting from scratch, you would want to educate yourself right from the start, so that you can produce quality work since day one.
It is advisable to get some form of training before you start your freelance writing jobs from home. The training will help you familiarize yourself with the industry and understand what it takes to be a successful freelance writer.
